A Physical Survey of the Kadar of Kerala/S.S. Ancient Human Remains/P. Gupta. 1970, 74 p., : The authors have dealt with the human remains recovered from two ancient sites (i) Nagarjanakunda Valley in Andhra Pradesh belonging to two cultural levels - neolithic and megalithic. The metric and morphologic evidence of skeletal remains revealed that neolithic people were long headed and megalithic people were broad headed. (ii) The second report is based on cranial remains excavated at Kumhar Tekri near the ancient city of Ujjain which yielded 42 human remains excavated in 1938-39. Taken as a whole the series suggest a population of one breeding population group bearing longhead.

For every individual data on 16 anthropometric variables were taken. Apart from this the data have been compared with those of other diverse groups. The sex differences which constitute an universal phenomenon particularly in respect of certain specific characters are also dealt with.
A Biometric Study on the Tribe of North Western Himalayan Region/S.K. Mazumder. 1976, 90 p., : The data presented in this volume were originally collected by Dr. B.S. Guha as a member of a scientific expedition party in 1929 from five ethnic groups of north-western Himalayan region. Here only a little more than six hundred adult male data are considered for analysis. A Radiological Study of Skeletal Maturity in 1976 Hand - Wrist Area of Bengali Boys and Girls/S.R. Das. 1976, 79 p., : This book presents the results of a mixed longitudinal study which was taken up in 1952 in the villages of Sarsuna and Barisha about 16 km. to the south from the heart of Calcutta city. A group of 294 boys and 251 girls from families belonging to the Rarhi Brahman, Dakshin Rarhi Kayastha and Vaidya castes was studied. Serial x-ray skiagrams were taken of the hand, wrist area under standard radiographical conditions and processing on or near birth days from 1 year to 21 years. The study reveals that the girls show in an average a longer duration of epiphyseal fusion in handwrist area than the boys.

Dermatoglyphics of Mysore Population/Arabind Basu. 1985, 146 p., $32. : The author has examined the dermatoglyphic data which were culled from both the sexes of Smartha Brahmans, Madhva Brahmans, Sri Vaisnava Brahmans, Lingayats, Vokkaligas and Adi Karnatakas. Altogether 1,281 individuals with complete sets of data were analysed for the purpose. The aforesaid data have also been compared with data from other published and unpublished materials to visualize the degree and nature of variation between and within the groups under the study. The results demonstrate that inter-caste differences are not uniform in all dermatoglyphic triats. The quantitative finger dermatoglyphic features in general do not reveal heterogeneity between the groups while qualitative finger dermatoglyphic findings are significantly different between most of the groups. Anthropometric Measurements and Ethnic Affinities of Chhattisgarh Tribes/S.H. The racial affinities of the Harappans are evaluated by applying a measure of generalised distance estimate. This longitudinal study of physical growth and skeletal maturity of the children of two villages in West Bengal is based on 22 anthropometric measurements and x-ray exposures recorded within + - 15 days from birth. This study conducted in 1952 on a group of 301 boys and 261 girls was followed after about 14 years and provided excellent material and wealth of information for the study of growth and development.

This book focuses two different aspects: (1) The x-ray radiological study of skeletal maturity as revealed in the hand and wrist skiagrams taken serially on children and (2) the study of the various aspects of physical growth including the growth curves in respect of a number of important anthropometric measures for the same children with accuracy and rigour of subsequent data analysis. Genetical Demography of Indian Population. 1989, 147 p., . In response to the need for undertaking researches on genetical demography papers were presented at a seminar organized by this Survey. Papers have been grouped under the following categories - tribal studies, caste and community studies and general perspective. The age at menarche among Chenchu women of Andhra Pradesh, fertility among the Shyam people of the Sibsagar district and reproductive performance among the Jaintias of Assam have been discussed in the tribal studies, various demographic features of the Chotes of Manipur, the Neik Gonds of Maharashtra and the Bhils and the Garasias of Udaipur have also been reported. One paper reports on a few demographic traits in a section of the Gallongs with endemic hypothyroidism.

People of India: The People of India project (POI) was launched by the Anthropological Survey of India on 2 October 1985. The objective of the project was to generate a brief, descriptive anthropological profile of all the communities of India, studying the impact on them of change and the development process, and the linkages that bring them together. This project covered the whole country, each state and union territory, unlike the surveys in the colonial period which covered only British India and a few princely states it was possible, through the POI, to identify, locate and study 4635 communities throughout India.
