There is no doubt that the future belongs to tourism. Even in recent years there has been a phenomenal growth in the number of people travelling for the purpose of leisure, sight-seeing and recreation--a growth that is far from having reached its zenith. This book in tourism has brought to the fore a large number of tangible an intangible elements that have economic, ecological, and cultural ramifications. Therefore this book Tourism for Development : A Managerial Approach is both topical and relevant and its attempt to delineate the road map for the promotion of tourism in India is of great significance.

This book is a collection of assorted researches that address some pressing tourism issues of the contemporary times that underline the nature of tourism in the 21st century. The research articles are all, in their own part, notable scholarly contributions documenting diverse aspects and studies related to the manner in which tourism is being developed in various regions, how communities are working at sustaining their environments and the attempts that are being made by the public and private sector in tourism development.

This book seeks to fulfill the needs of tourism development, and has thus engaged itself in seven sections, with issues ranging from tourism concepts, international tourism, sustainable tourism development, impact studies, marketing of tourism, alternate forms of tourism, destination management and development and human resource development for tourism.

One important fact highlighted in this book is the realization that the bounties of nature are extremely delicate and limited. In order to have sustainable as well as optimal use of these precious resources we need to constantly define the limits within which these can be utilised as also identify the sources that can cause them irreparable harm. This book therefore investigates the concepts and impacts of tourism and is focused on destination development in sustainable manner. It emphasises the need to develop tourism in a planned manner so as to reduce its negative impacts. One section of this book discusses all the issue related to behavioural aspects of tourism marketing.

As the travel and tourism industry is well on its way to becoming one of the most powerful growth engines in the coming millennium these research studies are relevant for a number of stakeholders like governments, destinations, tour operators, travel agents, tourism workers, developers, tourism researchers, students and travellers themselves.
