"The first World Fisheries Congress was held in Athens in 1992. It was divided into plenary sessions and thematic sessions. This volume comprises papers presented in the workshops and sessions of theme 5 and in the computer-use workshops of the congress. The authors treat a variety of problems and approaches in the assessment and management of fisheries, ranging from freshwater to marine environments, and from north-temperate to southwest Pacific regions. Methods of assessment discussed range from the more-or-less classical approaches, e.g., acoustic sampling and electrofishing, to emerging methods--the application of fractal geometry. The computer-use papers range from packaging conventional analytical techniques to dealing with the rapidly evolving field of computer graphics--it is heartening to see, in these papers, the amount of emphasis on developing "user-friendly" applications.

"The first volume to be published was the plenary session papers and the overviews of the six thematic sessions.

"The succeeding volumes as planned, treat case-histories and issues specific to each of the themes (1) conditions of the world's aquatic habitats; (2) fisheries use and policy; (3) protection of biodiversity; (4) international development; (5) assessment methods and management (this volume); and (6) aquaculture."
