"The present volume is a pioneering study highlighting art and architecture in Andhradesa based on artistic style. It is confined to Pakanadu which geographically corresponds to the south-eastern coastal tracts of Andhra Pradesh i.e., the lower Pennar region. The Telugu Colas of Nellore were an important ruling family who controlled this region during 12th-14th century A.D. and it was during this period the Pakanadu region reached heights of excellence in all spheres especially in the field of art and architecture.

In this work the author has attempted to study more than 30 temples systematically in 25 sites of the Pakanadu region for better understanding of the evolution of the regional style of architecture. Besides a brief description of the genesis and growth of the temples in south India, a critical and comparative study has been made to trace the influence of architectural features in the contiguous regions on the temples of Pakanadu. The present work is also a pioneering study for an earnest search into the historical background to the various religious trends and identification, description and interpretation of various gods and goddesses and their symbols after tracing mythological and textual background of a particular deity. The book is entirely the result of the author's fieldwork. The description of the temples are first available accounts and are lavishly illustrated with photographs and drawings." (jacket)
