Aquaculture has been one of the fastest growing agricultural sectors of the country with bulk of production coming from the fresh water environment. Fisheries offer many social, economic and biological advantages and constitute a unique sector offering animal protein to the broad economic cross section of the society. Water being a prime natural resource, a basic human need and a precious national asset, planning, development and use of water resources for food production must be based on its economics.

India is known as carp country. Culture of carps, fresh water prawn, brackish water fish and shrimps have received increased attention in recent years due to their high market value. Since there is significant potential for both horizontal and vertical expansion of aquculture sector, the system needs to be sustainable through improvement in human capacity, resource use and environmental management.

Aquaculture engineering is a core subject for the fisheris professionals which mainly covers the selection of suitable site, scientific layout, design and construction of fresh water, brackish water fish and prawn hatcheries or quality seed production and farms for quantity of production with minimal cost and maximum environment security. With this background the present book “A Text Book on Aquaculture Engineering” is oriented to meet the emerging challenges and future demands through 15 chapters. In the introductory chapter, different systems of aquaculture, ponds, tanks and various different production units are briefly described followed by land survey through chain surveying, levelling and contouring, computation of earthwork and soil properties. The following chapters include, site selection, design and construction of fresh water and brackish water fish and prawn farm and hatchery, different types and selection of pumps, and aeration, filtration and disinfection of water for different aquaculture systems. The construction and maintenance of different types of cages and net pen enclosures are also briefly presented at the end. This volume aims to provide authentic and comprehensive information on aquaculture engineering aspects for sustainable development of aquaculture system. It is specifically intended for students, research scientists, technologists, planners, farmers, young entrepreneurs and all stake holders.
