From the preface: Raj Man Chitrakar is Nepal’s first artist who painted wild birds and mammals extensively primarily working for Brian Houghton Hodgson in first half of 1800. Mr. Hodgson lived in Nepal more than two decades as British diplomat but with great interest in the natural history of the Himalayas. Raj Man Chitrakar was associated with almost every bird and mammal Brian Hodgson studied in the Himalayas.

After a gap of over 100 years, the country has seen another talented artist, Mr. Hira Lal Dangol.  Mr. Dangol worked with Robert Flemings and helped their project to produce the first ever field guide on Birds of Nepal. The first edition of this classical field guide was out in 1976. He illustrated all the bird pictures of Birds of Nepal with his fellow artist friend Hem Poudyal. Their Mentor artist was late Mr. Lain Singh Bangdel.

Hira Lal Dangol’s paintings in the past have been exhibited many times, solo or joint, in the country and also outside. Current exhibition of 36 new bird paintings in their natural surroundings are showcase of Mr. Dangol and his family members dedication. Mr. Dangol and family members have been able to bring these birds into life by using exceptional talents they possess. In this collection one can witness the find details of the brush working to carve bird parts by his family members P.L. Dangol, Ishwor Dangol, Meena Dangol and Pratima Dangol. Birds are vividly coloured, and very very lively—they remind us as if they are about to speak to us.
