"Nepal, the motherland of Lord Sakyamuni Buddha, is a country where Buddhism is being practised since its origin without any interruption. A study of Buddhism in Nepal may throw light on the impact of Buddhist thought in the socio-cultural development, Buddhist civilization etc. in Nepal and its contribution to the Buddhist studies. In this field, scholarly endeavour is needed. The present work of Mr. Naresh Man Bajracharya partially fulfils the need of study on the historical development of Buddhism in Nepal in a particular period i.e. 465 B.C. to 1199 A.D. Based upon a wide range of sources like inscriptions, genealogies, Chinese and Tibetan sources, the author has put efforts to sketch the historical development of Buddhism in Nepal during the Kirat and Licchavi period, the prominent Viharas in Nepal, the development of Buddhist sects in Nepal, Nepalese Buddhist scholars and their contributions and Tibetan Buddhist scholars who visited Nepal as a centre of Buddhist learning."
