From the Foreword by Gira Sarabhai: "A delegation headed by Prof. Yamanobe Tomoyuki, Prof. Takada Shizuo, Mr. Kanokogi Kenkichi of the Indo-Japan Freindship Association, and the publishers of Senshoku to Seikatsusha visited the Calico Museum in 1976, and requested permission to take photographs of the Collection for publishing a book on it. The museum acceded to this request, it being within the rules and in furtherance of the object with which the Museum was established. The high quality of Japanese photographs and printing was an added incentive for granting this permission.

"The first book to be published in the series envisaged by the Japanese concern appeared under the title SARASA in Japanese, and CHINTZ in English. As anticipated, the quality of printing and publication of the volume was of the highest.

"The present book on Brocaded Textiles from the Collection of the Calico Museum, constitutes the second volume in the series. Once again, the book is the result of active collaboration between the Calico Museum and Senshoku to Seikatsusha, as on the last occasion. The Japanese version appears under the imprint of Senshoku to Seikatsusha, and its English version is to be brought out by the Calico Museum, using the reproductions made by the Japanese publishing house."
