To the thoughtful scholar it suggests distance, vastness, wealth, scenic and historic charms, ancient art, barbaric wealth, as well as potential factors of national greatness. Sir Edwin Arnold has not unduly exalted the importance of a visit to India in any liberal education. No thinker can be an intellectual exile here. The student of language, history, ancient philosophy, or antique civilization finds a treasure house in the India of the past. She has been the nurse of useful arts, of subtle thought, and of epic verse. Fantastic mythologies, curious speculations, and occult sciences have here had their home.
