From the preface: " Latur was one of the worst earthquakes in Western Maharashtra and occurred in the early hours of 30 September 1993 claiming a toll of nearly 10, 000 lives. Tragic part of the event was that it had struck an area which was presumed to be free from shocks of great intensity. Considerable interest has been generated on this earthquake and other earthquakes in the peninsular region and studies have been initiated by a number of organizations, principally the Geological Survey of India, the Indian Meteorological Department and the National Geophysical Research Institute. The Department of Science and Technology took the lead in initiating a major programme in the Indian peninsular region during 1994-1998 with the object of improving the detection and location capabilities of earthquakes in the region. The present volume includes papers relating to studies carried out during post 1993 period."
