Endemic Fish Diversity of Western Ghats/edited by A. Gopalakrishnan and A.G. Ponniah. Lucknow, National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, 2000, ISBN 81-901014-2-0.
"The compendium is the bringing out of all papers, extended abstracts and recommendation of the national workshop held at Cochin in October 1998. The book for the first time of its kind in the country has given emphasis to the innumerable number of endemic freshwater fish fauna along the Western Ghats.
"The compendium is divided into five parts, the first part has listed all the 287 species of freshwater fishes of Western Ghats with their occurrence, abundance, distribution and conservation status, of which 192 are endemic ones and 18 ones are exotic/transplanted. The section has also prioritised a list of endemic fish fauna for aquaculture and ornamental fish farming. The second part gives emphasis on the fish diversity of selected stretch rivers of the Western Ghats and conservation efforts of threatened varieties. In part three, potential ornamental and food fishes from various river stretches of the Western Ghats are covered. Life history traits and captive breeding details of prioritised endemic species are dealt in part four. The recommendations of the national workshop have found its place in part five of the book followed by 6 appendices including summary of the workshop and literature referred."
