"The present volume is a collection of papers presented in an International Seminar at Dushanbe held in May 2002 under the joint auspices of the MAKAIAS and the Tajik Academy of Sciences besides the introductory address of the Indian Ambassador to Tajikistan and the message of greetings of the Prime Minister of Tajikistan. The papers included in this volume dwell upon themes from the historical and cultural links between the two countries to the possibilities of forging a future Eurasian system of regional cooperation, drawing attention to the vast archival wealth pertaining to Indian calligraphers of medieval times available in Central Asian Repositories to highlighting the work done by many research centres in Tajikistan and the role played by the policy of development of science and technology in the Republic of Tajikistan under conditions of transition to market economy. It also discusses the Tajik-Indian economic relations and analyses deeply their difficulties and future prospects. The process of state-building in Tajikistan in the wake of the disintegration of the USSR and the Tajik Civil War as well as the impact of the external factors such as the Afghan crisis, the Taliban and Al-Qaeda and the role and place of the regional powers and Islamic factor in Tajikistan as also the prospects for development of Indo-Tajik relations in the 21 century are discussed."
