"This book is the outcome of the National Conference on Pollution Control and Management in Coal Mining and Thermal Power Plants organized in Sambalpur University by the Departments of Environmental Sciences and Earth Sciences during December 1996. Out of some 50 papers presented in the Conference, only 20 papers have been selected for the book which are most relevant to the subject of coal mining methods, coal chemistry, environmental problems due to coal mining and handling, problem of mine filling, coal combustion methods, air pollution problems, fly ash and bottom ash disposal problems and utilization of fly ash in agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. This volume will be an important reference book for planners, technocrats, scientists and other research workers engaged in the field of coal mining and coal based thermal power plants and for nonprofessionals interested in safeguarding the environment."
