"This book, a revised version of Prof. Dr. Vijay Kumar Manandhar's doctoral dissertation, in two volumes, provides the most comprehensive history of Nepal-China relations up to 1955 A.D. It focuses especially on the Nepal-China war of 1791-1792, Nepal's diplomatic relations with China through the quinquennial mission system which formed an important and integral part of Sino-Nepalese relations, Nepal's interest in China and vice-versa sheds new light on several events in Nepal-China relations, and provides the first in-depth account of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Nepal and the People's Republic of China in 1955 A.D. This work also examines the political status of Nepal vis-a-vis China, mainly addressing the main basis for the Chinese claim of suzerainty over Nepal, and examines it with special reference to the Nepalese viewpoint as well as imperial China's concept of international law.
