From the introduction: "Northern India is defined for the purposes of this book as comprising the states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Delhi, which is arguably the area best known in Indian ornithological terms. The avifaunas of the Union Territories of Chandigarh and Diu are poorly known and they are here treated with Punjab and Gujarat, respectively. The book does not cover the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and northeast India because their inclusion would substantially increase its size. The region is bounded by Pakistan and the Arabian Sea to the west, Tibet to the north, Northeast India to the east and Southern India to the south. There are 812 species that regularly occur in the area and a further 94 species have been recorded as vagrants."
