From the preface: "This book is the outgrowth of a lithoprinted manual published originally by the author in 1939 for use in a course in vegetable diseases offered to graduate students. The number of research contributions in this field since that date is large, which alone necessitated revision. Moreover, the extension and specialization of vegetable culture in the United States has increased the pathological problems on the one had, while the number of technical specialists, advisory agents, agricultural industrialists, and vegetable growers who are often in contact with one or another disease situation has multiplied on the other. It is difficult to make a technical manual of this sort entirely satisfactory to all potential users. It is designed to bring together the essential information on the nature and control of most diseases of our important vegetable crops with references to pertinent original research papers. It is hoped that it will be useful to students making their first acquaintance with this special field of plant pathology and that it may serve as a useful reference for research workers and for those concerned with application of research."
