From the preface: "Mangroves of the Sundarbans, Vol. I, provides a detailed description of the faunal and floral diversity of the Sundarbans mangroves found in the southern portion of the Indian state of West Bengal. The Sundarbans mangroves cover an area of approximately 400,000 hectares in India and are an important source of wood and non-wood resources both for the local communities as well as for the larger economy. Long standing scientific management of these forests has ensured the conservation of a considerable area of mangroves. However, large scale reclamation over the past century, increasing human settlements and steadily decreasing freshwater flow into the forest, pose a considerable threat to the ecosystem and its resources."
