"HIV/AIDS is an unprecedented epidemic and public health emergency. According to recent estimates, around the world, over 33 million people are infected with HIV, and over 16 million have died of AIDS-related illnesses.
It is estimated that up to 90 per cent of HIV-positive people in low-income countries do not know their HIV status. In large part, this is due to the fact that there are few voluntary counselling and testing facilities available to the populations most affected by HIV/AIDS. Realising the fact, governments, international agencies, and non-governmental organisations are incorporating HIV testing and counselling programme on a broader and radically larger scale in their HIV/AIDS interventions, in order to meet an increasing global demand for access to care and prevention services.
The present volume provides a comprehensive analysis of HIV counselling practices available today. It contains information, ideas and suggestions for those who work with HIV clients and who want to improve their knowledge and skills in counselling in STD/HIV prevention, safer sex, pre- and post-HIV antibody testing and other issues related to the subject. It is designed to help counsellors, health workers, educators and all those working in STD/HIV/AIDS, to improve the effectiveness of their work and the quality of lives of the people they aim to support."
