"This volume of Marg is devoted to the monuments of Ahmadabad, the premier city of Gujarat. With its many mosques and tombs dating from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Ahmadabad preserves some of the finest Indian Islamic buildings, though these are still little known outside the region. The step-well, unique to Gujarat, is another feature of Ahmadabad's architecture. Hindu and Jain temples throughout the city are built in a variety of styles. Wooden houses with intricately carved wood-work testify to a vital indigenous tradition.

These diverse architectural traditions form the subject of separate chapters, each of which is generously illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Maps locate monuments within the city and its environs. The historical introduction to Ahmadabad and the description of its mosques and tombs are by John Burton-Page, the guest author." (jacket)
