"The primary object of this book is to provide critical examination of Arab politics with such assistance which may enable the students, teachers and scholars to understand the Islamic and western influence on the Modern Arab Nationalist Movement. The intention of this book is, in the first instance, to set out the elements of the mobilising formula of Islamism, having pinpointed some of the obstacles that our western outlook presents to its rational understanding. The book also identifies the real political origins of those acts of violence which are too systematically interpreted as a political expression of the process of 're-islamisation', to the detriment of essentialism that often affects the external view. Finally, it also considers the capacity of the Islamist upsurge to dialogue with the dynamic of modernisation of Arab nationalism and Islamic universalism." (jacket)
