From the preface: "Bangabhaban has an eventful history. The area with the building presently called 'Bangabhaban' started its journey with the partition of Bengal early in the twentieth century. It was then built as the office-cum-residence of the Lieutenant-Governor of Eastern Bengal and Assam. Though the area now called Bangabhaban remained only an occasional residence of the Governor of Bengal after the annulment of the partition in 1912, it came to life again with the creation of Pakistan in 1947. The Governors of Pakistan's eastern wing made it their office-cum residence. The importance of Bangabhaban grew significantly with the independence of Bangladesh. In fact, occasionally Bangabhaban became the nerve centre of all political activities of the country."
