"This book arose from the long-felt need for a field guide which would help observers to identify all the bird species occurring in the Indian subcontinent, but would be user-friendly and easily portable at the same time. We have achieved this aim by illustrating all the species on 96 colour plates and, in most cases, condensing the species texts onto the page facing the relevant plat. For most birds the illustrations are sufficient to allow their positive identification and a complete description was considered unnecessary. Only groups such as warblers and larks, which are hard to identify in the field, have received a somewhat fuller treatment."
