"Andhra Pradesh has a distinctive position in the Library Movement in India. The Movement in Andhra is addressed as 'Peoples' Movement'. It is the first state where Library enthusiasts organized themselves into a library association for fostering Library Movement. It has the distinction of starting the first vernacular library journal Granthalaya Sarvaswamu in 1915 which is still in publication. They organized library training courses, library pilgrimages, ingenious services like 'Boat Library Service'; etc. The leaders of Library Movement gone beyond their state for spreading Library Movement. They were instrumental in starting All India Public Library Association in 1919; Publishing First Library Journal in English in India--The India Library Journal (1924); and starting Bengal Library Association, Madras Library Association and many more. This book covers Library Movement in different regions of Andhra, library legislation, other professional associations, important libraries, land-marks in Library Movement and much more." (jacket)
