"This book attempts to initiate a comparative study of food security in India and Sri Lanka since independence. It attempts a preliminary assessment of how food security goals are currently being achieved or thwarted in South Asia, especially in India and Sri Lanka. The performance of agriculture and cropping pattern are very important elements of food security in South Asia. It provides a comprehensive assessment of food crops, i.e. cereals, rice, wheat, coarse grains, pulses since 1961 in South Asia in general, and in India and Sri Lanka in particular. Different programmes and policies are significant to ensure food security in a nation. Agricultural policies in general and food policy in particular, therefore, should be designed to facilitate food security by providing guidance for positive adjustment. The book provides carefully documented analysis of food policies relating to supply, demand and distribution, and suggests ways to improve them in both the countries. The major determinants of food demand, the population growth, rising income, food grain prices, and shift in consumption patterns are comparatively focused as well. Since, the households form a central social unit of access to food through the public distribution system, the book analysed the different phases of food distribution in India and Sri Lanka over the past five decades and finally exhibits thought provoking findings and presents some policy recommendation and suggestions."
