"Titled as backward caste politics, the study explores and delineates the causes and consequences of socio-political mobility in backward caste-class-nexus.

It presents an analysis of development beyond Sanskritization. Because of historico-political dynamics in Indian society since independence, today, the causes of mobility in the caste-structure are more oriented to political mobilization and participation than to Sanskritization.

Emergence of small regional parties, the politics of making and breaking parties, furthering caste-based interests in the grab of the ideology of improving the lot of the kisan and the poor, shifting political alliances with hard bargaining for the advantages and interests of caste elites and criminalization of politics are some of the consequences which this study analyses.

For an in-depth analysis this study is confined to U.P. and Bihar --today, a strong and aggressive microcoms of backward caste politics." (jacket)
