"This publication is an extension of the author's thesis entitled "The Development of Hindustani Classical Music in Mauritius from 1960 onwards". The thesis was completed and submitted in 2004 and consequently it covers the period and situation up to 2004.
The idea to start such a research work on the evolution of Indian Music and Dance in Mauritius originated from the writing up of an article for "Rencontre avec L'inde", the monthly publication of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations New Delhi, India. She found out that there were records and printed materials on other cultural aspects of Mauritius but very little on Indian Music. Only few scattered written information was available. She could find a few books of Dr. I. Nundlall and some articles in newspapers. She interviewed Mr. and Mrs. Nandkishore and some other musicians who were very eager to talk about their experiences concerning Indian Classical Music in Mauritius.
As no comprehensive work had so far been done in this field, she herself set the task to do some deeper research on Indian music so that the future generation does not loose track of the rich cultural possession left by our forefathers and some very devoted musicians." (jacket)
