"The energy requirement of both developed and developing countries is on increase even though the efforts are on, to reduce energy intensity of the economy. Out of all types of energy sources, the dependence on fossil fuel continues to be the maximum and the scenario is not likely to change soon.
Among all fossil fuel the natural gas is the most eco-friendly and is a preferred fuel of the century. However, five countries of the world viz. Russian Federation, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE own 63% of the gas reserves and they only consume 22.5%. Further, countries like USA, which owns only 3.3% of world gas reserves, is using almost 22% of the world gas consumption. In respect of India, the proven gas reserves are limited to 0.6% of the world reserves and the consumption is 1.4% of the world. These disparities lead to strong gas trade globally.
The world trade in Natural Gas has mostly been through cross border pipelines. LNG trade which until recently had only 20% share, is now picking up very fast. During the period 2002-2006 the LNG mode of trade has increased by 46%.
This book covers all the aspects related to LNG, such as the availability of LNG globally, LNG consuming countries, LNG transportation, LNG SPA provisions and negotiations. This book also highlights the ways and means for economizing gas treatment for LNG plant, the liquefaction technology, the LNG shipping and LNG regasification especially with respect to utilizing cold energy of LNG in the regasification plant. In the Indian context more thrust has been given on the regasification side of the LNG value chain, since Indian will continue to import LNG for quite some time.
The safety in production, transportation, handling of LNG has been described in detail and exclusive chapter has been devoted to LNG safety apart from description of safety measures at various stages of LNG value chain.
It is intended that this book will serve as a reference guide for those, who are concerned with the LNG including students and research scholars."
