"Kanchipuram was the home of the various religions movements of South India. Buddhism and Jainism reached their zenith here, Shaivism and Vaishnavism had their beginnings at Kanchi. It was at Kanchi that Adi Shankara established one of his maths, the Shri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. It were also at Kanchi that the foundations of South Indian Art and Architecture was first laid. In fact, Kanchipurm can be called a text book of South Indian history. There is no other city where each succeeding dynasty left its imprint.

The papers published in this book are the work of a group of erudite scholars presented during a seminar Nagareshu Kanchi organized by C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar Institute of Indological Research."
