From the Introduction: "This volume includes three major groups of microorganisms, namely Cyanobacteria, Bacteria and Fungi. These groups have been placed in the Flora Section on the basis of two considerations. First, this Encyclopedia is intended to serve as an inventory of the biodiversity of the country which these groups are important constituents. Second, over the past many decades, these groups have been treated as belonging to the plant world. The first two groups include both non-photosynthetic and photosynthetic, unicellular or coenocytic filamentous organisms with carbohydrate-containing cell wall, lacking an organized nucleus, and possessing an absorptive mode of nutrition (as opposed to engulfing mode characteristic of the animal kingdom), while fungi are exclusively non-photosynthetic with an organized nucleus and a chitin-containing cell wall.
The species of Cyanobacteria and other bacterial groups described in this volume has been arranged on the basis of the newly proposed system of classification published in Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, Second Edition, Volume 2, Part A, eds. DJ. Brenner, NR Krieg and JT Staley, Springer 2005. This classification is based on the extensive nucleotide sequence data that are now available on rDNA, which corresponds to the small 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA). The 16S rDNA sequence is a highly conserved genetic region across the evolutionary tree and has been extensively used in bacterial diagnostics. This new classification is reproduced here (Appendix 1) in order that the reader may relate a species to its taxonomic position in the newly proposed classification."

"The Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh is the first illustrated compendium of all the life forms so far identified in Bangladesh. In 28 volumes it makes an exhaustive inventory of the whole range of plant and animal species in the country. While focusing mainly on the description, habits and habitats of the various species, comments are also made on their economic and ecological significance. Published both in Bangla and English the encyclopedia should be useful to those working for biodiversity conservation, teachers and students of the natural sciences, as well as general readers.
The encyclopedia is compiled and edited by a team of experts, with contributions from the leading scientists and researchers of the country, making it an authoritative reference work. It is another pioneering publication of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, following the Banglapedia - the National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh." (jacket)
