"This volume is the first in the series of three, assigned to the textiles and costumes preserved in the Bharat Kala Bhavan, Banaras Hindu University. Founder of the Museum, the Late Rai Krishnadas started this collection in the early decades of the present century and within sixty years made it a leading museum of the world. Qualitatively it is one of the best collections of Indian Art today for which the credit goes to the Late Rai Sahib. He saw many of these shawls during the preparation of the catalogue and gave his valuable suggestions."
