"Professor Abdul Karim was one of the great scholar in the field of medieval and archaeological studies relating to the history of Bengal.

His field of study has been especially focused on Muslim life, society, religion and culture. No other Bengali historian has written so many original books and articles in both English and Bangla on this subject. The period of Bengal history which Professor Karim has brought to the limelight of historical study had almost gone out of the ambit of research because of the dearth of source materials and linguistic problems. He collected his sources from medieval coins, inscriptions, books written in Persian, and writings on the Sufi-Saints and Bangla literature of the middle ages. His success as a path-breaking historian can be attributed to hard work, perseverance and his creative faculty. Professor Karim, however, has not denied the Bengali heritage in the study of history. Rather in his writings he frankly acknowledged his debt to his predecessors and expressed deep gratitude to them.

This volume was originally designed to facilitate Abdul Karim, but ill luck would have it, this wish has remained unfulfilled with his sad demise. Many scholars from home and aboard has contributed in this volume, as a mark of respect to a great scholar." (jacket)
