Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh, Vol. 26. Birds/edited by Kamal Uddin Siddiqui

From the Introduction: "This volume of the encyclopedia is about the birds of Bangladesh. It presents photographs, descriptions, distributions and other basic information of 650 species of birds that occur now in Bangladesh or occurred here before and have become extinct/extirpated in the past two centuries. Of the birds that previously occurred in Bangladesh, only one species, the Pink-headed Duck, has probably become globally extinct. Another 29 species of birds have been extirpated from Bangladesh but continue to occur elsewhere. These extirpated species are known to have definitely occurred in Bangladesh in the past, although suitable habitats for a number of those birds may no longer exist in this country. The remaining 620 species of birds have been seen in recent years and one can claim that they occur in Bangladesh today. Of these 620 species of birds, 143 are 'vagrant' to Bangladesh, i.e. occurring very irregularly or seen extremely rarely. That leaves us with 477 species of birds that are regularly seen in Bangladesh. Of the 477 species of regularly occurring bird, 301 are resident and 176 are seasonal visitor to Bangladesh. Of the 176 regularly occurring migratory species of birds, 160 are winter visitor, 6 are summer visitors and 10 are spring or passage migrants to Bangladesh. For us, however, all the 650 species of birds including the extinct, the extirpated, the vagrant, the resident and the seasonal visitor make up our national list of the birds of Bangladesh."

"The Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh is the first illustrated compendium of all the life forms so far identified in Bangladesh. In 28 volumes it makes an exhaustive inventory of the whole range of plant and animal species in the country. While focusing mainly on the description, habits and habitats of the various species, comments are also made on their economic and ecological significance. Published both in Bangla and English the encyclopedia should be useful to those working for biodiversity conservation, teachers and students of the natural sciences, as well as general readers.

The encyclopaedia is compiled and edited by a team of experts, with contributions from the leading scientists and researchers of the country, making it an authoritative reference work. It is another pioneering publication of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, following the BANGLAPEDIA - the National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh." (jacket)

  • A thousand thanks for promptly sending the Pali English Dictionary which I had needed urgently. The securely packed parcel arrived safely here in the South of France all the way from distant India. I am happy that this large volume is still in mint condition.

I know of no other Indian publisher whose books can equal the superb quality of Vedams books. Similarly, no other Indian distributor of books can excel Vedams as regards the quickness of service, the perfect packing of books and their safe delivery at overseas destinations.
