"After a lapse of more than hundred years, since the publication of well documented "The Orchids of Sikkim Himalaya" by King and Pantling during 1898, an attempt has been made to unfurl some more information out of the rich orchid treasure of Sikkim. It took author twenty one years of continuous research works to bring forth hitherto undiscovered species, rediscover those which were thought to be extinct and to understand other expects of orchid kingdom specially the behavioural changes. The book has been brought out with the intention to give more information to the readers, about the orchids particularly those native to Sikkim and more importantly with the hope that the book will be helpful to the botanists in their studies. Efforts have been made to cover as many as species including those which are not indigenous to Sikkim but brought from North Eastern India and nurtured in different nurseries and gardens of Sikkim since long time back. The book deals with 557 taxa of orchids out of an estimated 1229 species reported from India, 523 taxa are indigenous to Sikkim.

The book reflects the extremely rich biodiversity of Sikkim which falls under the north eastern region of India, thus assigning the taxonomic study on this group of vascular plants occurring in tropical, sub-tropical and alpine zones in this area, and great significance and value. The region acts as the transitional zone between India, Indo-Nepal, Indo-Malayan and Indo-Chinese biogeographic regions. The region is not only the seat for micro-endemic overlapping with Burmese, Chinese and Sino-Japanese species but also forming a formidable ecological barrier for some species from transmigration. Many workers explorers made studies in this region in past and had come out with reports of many new species. Yet many hidden species must be waiting to be discovered when future researchers would make endeavours to cover more areas." (jacket

  • A thousand thanks for promptly sending the Pali English Dictionary which I had needed urgently. The securely packed parcel arrived safely here in the South of France all the way from distant India. I am happy that this large volume is still in mint condition.

I know of no other Indian publisher whose books can equal the superb quality of Vedams books. Similarly, no other Indian distributor of books can excel Vedams as regards the quickness of service, the perfect packing of books and their safe delivery at overseas destinations.
