"Water and sanitation is most essential for sustaining life in all its manifestations. With the rapid growth of urban populations, the demand for potable water and sanitation has increased.

Shortage of water is becoming more acute in almost all cities and towns, specially the metropolitan cities in India and particularly in the Mangalore City Corporation Area. This book entitled "An Economic Analysis of Urban Water Supply and Sanitary Services in Mangalore City Corporation Area" covers economic analysis of demand and supply, investment pattern (coast recovery), pricing mechanism in urban water and sanitary services.

This book further elaborates the efficiency of service delivery and consumers satisfaction on the services provided by ULB (Urban Local Body i.e. Mangalore City Corporation, Dakshina Kannanda District of Karnataka).

The author (Dr. Nagendra) visited different regions, which covers water supply from Higher Level Reservoirs, Lower Level Reservoirs and water supply from Panambur Area in Mangalore to gather information and data from beneficiaries (consumers). It is evident from the field survey that the consumers suffered from irregularity in water supply, low pressure, leakages in distribution and lack of sanitation facilities.

This book with major work covering the problems associated with urban utility services such as water supply and sanitation throws light on the need for controlled water consumption in micro level.

The present study highlights the importance of water preservation, the application of water harvesting technology at household level and the vital need for wastewater treatment for non domestic purposes.
