From the Preface: "This volume contains some new features in comparison to Vol. III, to which notice of the readers and users is drawn. They are listed below :

Instead of entering words separately as independent entities, group them according to a common derivational source, so that their relationships, etymological as well as semantic, become transparent. This has not been done in a mechanical way though, since words that have some 'special' use, or need to be shown separately, have been so shown.

In these groups, often omitted the base of the inner entries, replacing it by a wave signal (~), and then used the plus sign (+) if it is compounded with the preceding element, or rarely, a hyphen (-) if hyphenation is intended. When there is neither of these following the ~, it means that the two components are collocated to form a phrase, not a compound.

In Tatsama words, that is words borrowed from Sanskrit with the orthography transcripted, if there was a Sandhi involved, shown the break-up, separating the components that made up the Sandhi form.

Also indicated the stylistic and sociological registers of the words, by signs like f(ormal) l(earned), t(echnical), sl(ang) etc., in addition to the earlier myth(ological) etc.

As Bengali spelling system has been changed at least twice in the last century, modern spelling has also been shown when the entry is in older spelling. Often the older spelling has been clearly identified.

Most of the words of a dictionary of this size are bound to be outside those in everyday use. Therefore, for words that are difficult or of a formal nature, the commonly or conversationally used Bangla forms have also been given in the synonyms.

Meanings have been distinguished in cases of homonymy, by numbering the entries. Glides have been shown with more thoroughness than do before."
