"The book makes a comprehensive evaluation of some of the major Indian writers, films, box-office hits, critics/theorists in English and also focus on some of the issues vital to contemporary Indian literary criticism. Even though much is available as scattered pieces in the field, there has seldom been an effort to bring together the major writers for close scrutiny in a single volume. Similarly, the efforts to highlight the issues of contemporary criticism with special reference to Indian English have also been scanty. The canon of Indian English criticism is still amorphous. There is hardly any university in India where it is taught with academic seriousness. This signal book shows that Indian critical writing in English is an exciting area which deserves to be a subject of serious study, academic attention and painstaking research by the English departments in our colleges and universities.
For a conscious reader, it is an incomparable critical study of Indian English literature, offering both a qualitative perspective and a measuring rod at a time of immense growth in the tradition of Indian writing in English." (jacket)
