From the preface to the second edition: "The first edition of the book was brought out in 1979 and subsequently additional fungi (upto 1981) were published in the form of supplement in the Part-II of the first edition which was published in 1981. During the last decade numerous (about four thousands) new fungi have been added from different parts of the country. These have been published in various scientific journals, regional reports as well as in annual reports of different institutions. We could have added few more supplements to our original compilation (first edition) but the enormous addition of new fungal flora compelled us to compile a second edition so that the mycologist may conveniently look for all the fungi in one cover. Even while we were compiling this volume there was regular addition of the new fungi with great speed with the result that we have been able to incorporate only such fungi which have been published up to 1988. We hope that the students of mycology, plant pathology as well as fungal taxonomists and monographers will find it to be useful for their ready reference."
