"The theme of this book is that agricultural research thrusts for the nineties and beyond will have to stress harnessing the best in science and technology, both old and new, for increasing food production as well as for generating more jobs and income.
"Most of the contributions to this book are modified versions of papers presented at the Project Design Workshop organised by the CRSARD at Madras on 22 and 23 November 1991 coinciding with the 104th birth anniversary of the great Russian geneticist N.I. Vavilov. Some additional material includes a paper on Vavilov by T. Dobhzansky and the valedictory address by Nikonov, last President of VASKhNIL.
"Divided into four broad sections, the book deals with the life and contributions of N.I. Vavilov to conservation of biological diversity, genetic resources for sustainable food security, technology strategies for sustainable agriculture and socio-political issues in genetic conservation.
"Also included in the appendix is the agreed text of the convention on biological diversity held at Rio de Janeiro." (jacket)
