Professor Prabodh Chandra Bagchi(1898-1956) was a pioneering Orientalist who gave a new perspective to research on Indian history and culture. He started his research career under the famous French scholar Sylvain Levi and obtained the prestigious degree of Docteur-es-Lettres from the Paris University. He was a polyglot and thus well-equipped to handle the source materials in various languages. A pioneer in Sino-Indo-Tibetological and Buddhist Studies he was also an efficient administrator. He served Visva-Bharati University in various capacities and when he died he was its Vice-Chancellor. He served Peking University in 1947 and 1948 as a Guest Professor.
