"There are a number of perceptive articles on Hemingway's prose in anthologies and journals besides chapters on his prose in many books. But most of these articles do not discuss the impact of Hemingway's lyric propensity on his prose. Hemingway was a lyric writer and this had a deep impact on his writings. This study deals with the characteristic use of the language by Hemingway. Thus, it has the same meaning as style. Hemingway's characteristic use of the language has been illustrated by giving examples from his short stories and novels.

The first chapter is divided into three sub-chapters--boyhood, war, and soldier's home. The second chapter deals with the Paris years. The third chapter discusses Hemingway's diction. The fourth chapter deals with syntax, the fifth with dialogue, the sixth with irony, the seventh with symbols and the eighth chapter deals with painting." (jacket)
