"In this book an attempt has been made to establish the affinities between T.S. Eliot and his predecessor Tennyson. Instead of limiting Eliot to the aesthetics of high modernism, it is important to lay more emphasis than is given at present to his Victorian inheritance in order to demonstrate the multifarious dimensions of his genius. It also bears out Eliot's position on the creative use of tradition. To substantiate the claim that Eliot always remained aware of Tennyson's work, his changing response to Tennyson from initial indifference to later respect is first traced through citations from Eliot's own criticism.
