Sangeeta Gupta. Translated by Keshav Malik, National Publishing House, 2005, viii, 76 p, ISBN : 8121401488, $25.00 (Includes free airmail shipping)

"Why words and images in tandem, as in this volume? -For the simple reason that they complement each other, that is, word and image come to the deeply sensing and envisioning faculty.

Moments of intensified perception may come from the arts--whether via image or letter. Also, only the arts echo one another. And, one may be certain too, that there is one experience which remains almost identical in origin and effect, whether it is turned into poetry or painting. This, to repeat, is the moment of vision, the one of unforgettable vividness, and heightened perception. Also, it is well known that vision is an illumination of our solitude. Sangeeta Gupta, with her by now large body of paintings and drawings, has certainly been visited by the muse in her choice moments, and it is for this reason that she is a painter as much as being poet (in Hindi). She has no 'ambition', as currently described, but only an aspiration that she refine the texture of her life experience, and respect her better feelings. But for Keshav Malik, he have enriched himself life-long by feasting on the works of art that painters and sculptures prepare for the community from their inwardness. In the same way, the power of great music has energized this wielder of the pen. This has been true happiness. Thus, the poetic word and the illuminant image could doubly revive the heart, when in union. This small volume, then, is put forth in the hope that we may bring moments of joy, illumination or elevation to the perusers of it." (jacket)
