"This is the first ever colour guide on the amphibians and reptiles of Northeast India. Out of 274 species of Herpetofauna known from this region, 101 species are illustrated with description in this guide. Those included are 29 species of amphibians, 21 lizards, 29 snakes, 21 species of freshwater turtles and tortoises and the Gharial.

Each species is illustrated with one or more colour photographs. Species account comprises of English, local and scientific names, maximum size attained, distinguishing characters, distribution, legal protection in India (specifying the schedule of the wildlife Protection Act, 1972), also CITES list where ever available, conservation status following IUCN criteria and a short description on their habit and habitat. A note is added to some species, such as whether venomous or otherwise dangerous to humans. Most of the species included in this book are commonly seen, some are rare and few are threatened and of utmost conservation interest. "
