"This is the fourth title in the series 'Science and Nationalism' sponsored by the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi. It again deals with the interface between Science and Nationalism initiated by Mahendralal Sircar. The savant of scientific research in this monograph is Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose. He successfully overcame the colonial shackles on science and went on to become the prophet of a parallel science in India. The first exponent of wireless communication and life in plants, he had to struggle to come out of the periphery of imperial science into the mainstream of world science. He became the founder of the Bose Research Institute, a pioneering research seminary in basic sciences for Indian. He was also a pioneer of environmental studies and author of a remarkable Bengali Work 'Abyakta' on environment. His life and work comprise the universe of this monograph." (jacket)
