The world population is increasing rapidly specially in developing countries demanding to accelerate their economic growth for the survival and to fulfill the basic needs simultaneously to maintain the high consumption level altogether have put our earth’s environment in danger. The natural/anthropogenic induced hazards/disasters like earthquakes landslides cyclones floods and droughts have increased during last few decades in terms of their frequency and intensity both particularly in Asia and Pacific Asia causing great loss to human beings and economy exhibiting many socio economic and political implications.

Realizing these facts academicians politicians administrators and planners etc. started to think and discuss these issues seriously at global level. It resulted into environment vs. development conflict. To achieve ad maintain the economic growth in different sectors of economy for the welfare of human beings without environmental degradation became a major challenge for every country of the world.

Environmental sustainability and socio economic development are today recognized as interdependent integral components of sustainable development and poverty reduction.

The present book is a compilation of research papers presented in the International Conference on Energy Environment and Disaster for Sustainable Development held at Banaras Hindu University Varanasi from 11 to 15 Jan 2010 jointly organized by faculty of management studies department of geography BHU and GSMI Michigon USA. The volume highlights various aspects and related issues of environment and development like conflicting domains environmental deterioration biodiversity depleti9on environmental perception and laws and role of GIS in effective management of urban environment.
