"Inspite of making good efforts to improve wastelands and to restrict good lands not to degrade further, by various methods of improvement, efforts have not proved so effective. Perhaps, the best alternative would be to find out genetic potential of tree species to survive and grow, and can give not only soil protection from water and wind erosion and denudation but also improve physical, chemical and biological properties of marginal lands.

"Raising of agronomic crops and other seasonals is either very difficult or uneconomical on marginal lands. In such situations selected tree species can be grown on large scale without the need of more agricultural inputs.

"The book provides guidelines on 22 tree species for their cultivation techniques in brief. Almost all three species in question are multipurpose, medium to fast growing, can tolerate adverse edapho-climatic conditions, they arte capable of producing large quantity of biomass because of their wide phytoplasticity and all are environmental friendly. Lists of tree species suitable for different purposes and situations are given in the last followed by subject index.

"Interested persons may choose the tree species on the basis of local edapho-climatic conditions and their felt needs. The information given in book encourages for tree farming. One can modify the aspects as per one’s need. Hope university teachers, extension workers, planners, persons engaged in small scale industries and those who are aware about the role played by tree cover on earth, will find this handy reference of immense importance."
