"The present monograph constitutes the first attempt to solve the riddle of Madhva's sources in a systematic and methodic manner. After presenting the previous scholarship on this matter Mesquita investigates the theological background which may have allowed Madhva to fabricate in all honesty Sruti and Smrti sources. Mesquita shows that the dilemma of either believing that Madhva had access to otherwise texts or considering Madhva to be liar is false one. Rather Madhva's belief that he was the third Avatara of Vayu (after Hanumat and Bhisma) and his doctrine of Avatara as being absolutely identical to the deity it incarnates blur and sublate the distinction between the 'author' of the (in the case of Sruti, eternal) text and its 'reader'."

"Mesquita's careful examination of Madhva's works has shown the way in which Madhva proceeded in creating his sources. His work is an important contribution to the study of Madhva which has been rather neglected in Western scholarship."

"Mesquita's work represents a first attempt at the examining the authenticity of Madhva's citations by taking into consideration the literary and theological framework in which they appear... This is a fascinating study, deserving of much attention, specially from scholars in India.""
