Algal Diversity at Jayakwadi Bird Sanctuary
The Jayakwadi project, located on the Godavari River at Paithan, Maharashtra, has given rise to the Nathsagar reservoir. Spanning 55 km in length, 27 km in width, and covering 340 square kilometers, this waterbody has become a vital habitat for numerous local and migratory birds. In recognition of its importance, the Maharashtra government has designated it as 'the Jayakwadi Bird Sanctuary'. The sanctuary attracts over 200 bird species from around the world, particularly during winter. To understand the foundation of the birds' food chain, a survey of algal species was conducted. The findings revealed 466 distinct species of algae, belonging to various classes, which are documented in this book along with illustrative figures.
