"This book deals with the geo-economic aspects of the bovine-stock of India with special reference to rural development. The study covers four different planks.

First, analysis of the existing spatial pattern of the bovine stock of India; second, availability of nutritional level of the bovines through composition of fodder and feeds; third, analysis of the determinants of bovine composition and its economy, and fourth, the role of dairying in rural development with respect to socio-economic aspects of rural India.

The emerging propositions are based not only on the secondary data analysis but also the verifications through micro-level primary investigations covering districts of Rajasthan and Orissa. Consequently, the recommendations are based on the testification of facts at different agro-climatic and ecological niche for rural India.

In the wake of mechanisation in agriculture and growth in agricultural production and hence, residual fodder the bovine-stock of India needs fresh attention for planned development. The effort in this regard will help policy planners to restructure the bovine-stock in favour of less number, better quality and more milchy cattle. This book, therefore, fulfils an important gap in this regard.

This book is useful not only to professional academics but also to policy-makers, regional planners and people associated with animal husbandry and rural development." (jacket)
