The present book attempts to study the spatial distribution of artisans and their major crafts in India. The socio economic conditions both caste-wise and region-wise, based on primary data were analysed by selecting South Delhi and East Delhi Districts of the NCT, Delhi. Efforts have also been made to understand the relationship between various socio-cultural and economic parameters on the one hand and the artisan communities on the other. It also states how the contemporary economic change and modest return form the traditional occupation have diverted a section of the artisans to leave their dynastic activities. The book also highlights the governments policies and various schemes for the welfare of the artisans.

The effect of industrialization and modernization on artisans and artisanal activities and their future prospects have also been discussed. Finally a list of few suggestions and recommendations has been presented to meet out the challenges of the modernization.
